A historic project as Adapt accent lighting in Reactor Hall R1 at KTH

Scenic lighting in the Reactor Hall at KTH

We are currently working on a historic and exciting project: the installation of ambient and accent lighting in Reactor Hall R1 at KTH. This is the site of Sweden’s first nuclear reactor. Today, the space is used to create a wide variety of experiences in the fields of events, performance, theater, and music.

About 25 meters down into the rock, beneath KTH in Stockholm, lies the site of Sweden’s first nuclear reactor, R1. It was located here from 1954 to 1970 and, of course, has long since been dismantled. What remains instead is an exciting space: a hall built into a rock cavern with an impressive ceiling height of 11.5 meters. Today, the space is used as a combination of a museum, cultural center, seminar and event venue, and more.

Flexible and user-friendly stage lighting

The purpose of the project is to design and install ambient and accent lighting, which means a lighting system capable of adapting to a wide variety of events. Therefore, it is important that the system be flexible and adaptable. It must thus be possible to adjust everything from the intensity and color to the direction of the light. A key requirement is therefore that the system is user-friendly and that it is easy to switch between different lighting settings.

Suitable for all kinds of events

In planning the project, we have therefore based our approach on a few common types of events. These primarily include lectures, performances, exhibitions, and conferences. Consequently, we have designed for a basic or standard level of lighting that can be customized as needed. This will make it easy to both add and remove lights, depending on the type of event.

Create a creative meeting place

The goal of the project is to create a creative space where people can meet others and do things together, thereby learning from and about one another. The space will also host public events such as performances, lectures, and exhibitions.

The project is a collaboration

Adapt is executing the project in collaboration with Edsvikens El, Akademiska hus, and KTH. We have recently concluded the design and testing phase. Here you can watch the first film (of three) and hear Leif Handberg, facility manager at Reactor Hall R1, as he discusses the project.
