LED Screens for Polestar's Super Bowl Commercial

Adapt supplied LED screens for TV and film production when the car manufacturer Polestar recorded a commercial for its US launch. We utilized the LED screens for lighting to generate sophisticated visual special effects on the car's finish. The commercial aired during the Super Bowl, one of the largest TV events in the USA, reaching over 99 million viewers.

When Polestar was preparing to launch one of its models in the American market, a commercial featuring advanced visual effects was produced. This film was part of a larger initiative, as it was slated to air during the Super Bowl – one of the most highly anticipated television broadcasts of the year in the USA. The production company B-Reel Films was responsible for the production and engaged Adapt to supply high-resolution LED screens for the shoot.

To achieve the visual effects in the film, a specially designed lighting setup was required to accentuate the car's contours and finish. Adapt was therefore commissioned to develop a technical solution utilizing high-resolution LED screens, which served as a lighting effect to generate movements, circles, and reflections directly in-camera. By combining digital lighting, meticulously planned camera angles, and a mirror-finish paint, effects were created that imparted a dynamic and futuristic aesthetic to the vehicle.

Adapt was responsible for the technical LED solution in the project, encompassing the planning of equipment and rigging, drawing documentation, as well as the installation and operation of the equipment during filming. This technical solution enabled precise control over the lighting and rapid adjustment of effects throughout the production.

LED Screens Created Lighting Effects

To achieve the desired lighting effects, high-resolution beMatrix LEDskin panels were employed, serving as both light source and visual background. Two large LED screens were constructed around the car – a background screen measuring 20 × 4.5 meters and a ceiling-mounted screen of 8 × 10 meters.

By controlling the content displayed on the LED screens, the film crew was able to generate movements, circles, and reflections that mirrored in the car's finish. This resulted in natural and controllable lighting that produced the visual effects directly in-camera, eliminating the need for extensive post-processing. During filming, the lighting could be adjusted and altered with a single button press, thereby making both production and post-production faster and more efficient.

FAQ

LED screens can function as both a light source and a visual background in film production. By displaying dynamic content on the screens, reflections, movements, and color shifts can be generated directly in-camera. Adapt employs high-resolution LED solutions to create controlled lighting effects that enhance visual expressions without extensive post-processing.

LED-based lighting offers precise control over color, intensity, and movement, enabling film crews to generate visual effects directly during production. Adapt develops technical solutions utilizing LED screens for both set design and lighting in film and event productions.

By strategically combining lighting, camera angles, and reflective surfaces, visual effects can be generated directly in-camera during production. LED screens are capable of displaying dynamic graphics and light patterns that reflect off object surfaces. Adapt designs and installs technical solutions enabling the real-time creation of such effects.

Technical production encompasses the planning, rigging, installation, and operation of equipment, including lighting, video, and set design, throughout the filming process. This ensures seamless production execution and the attainment of the intended visual results. Adapt delivers technical expertise and equipment for advanced film and media productions.

When visual effects are generated directly in-camera, the results are more natural, and the production process gains efficiency. This minimizes the need for extensive digital post-processing and facilitates real-time visualization of the final outcome during filming. Adapt develops solutions that leverage equipment and set design to create effects in real-time.

Adapt provides comprehensive solutions encompassing LED screens, lighting, rigging, set design, video systems, and technical personnel. By integrating equipment, design, and production expertise, we establish the foundation for visually impactful productions across film, events, and digital media.
