Historic assignment as Adapt installs power lighting in Reaktorhallen R1 at KTH

We are currently working on a historic and exciting assignment; installation of environmental and power lighting in Reaktorhallen R1 at KTH, the site of Sweden's first nuclear power reactor. Today the space is used to create a variety of experiences in events, performance, theatre and music.

About 25 meters beneath the rock, under KTH in Stockholm, is the site of Sweden's first nuclear reactor R1. It was here between 1954 and 1970 and is, of course, long gone. What remains is an exciting space, a hall built in a rock chamber with an impressive ceiling height of 11.5 metres. Today, the space is used as a mix of museum, cultural centre, seminar and event venue and more.

Flexible and user-friendly effect light

The aim of the project is to create and install environmental and impact lighting, which means a lighting system to suit a variety of events. Therefore, it is important that it is a flexible and adaptable system. This means it must be possible to control everything from the intensity and colour to the direction of the light. It is therefore essential that the system is user-friendly and that it is easy to switch between different lighting sets.

Adapted to all kinds of events

In planning the project, we have therefore taken as our starting point some commonly occurring events. These are mainly lectures, performances, exhibitions and conferences. Consequently, we have designed for a basic or standard level of task lighting that can then be adapted. It will therefore be convenient to both add and remove lights, depending on the event.

Creating a creative meeting place

The aim of the project is to create a creative meeting place where people can meet others and do things together. This is to learn from and about each other. The space will also be used for public events such as performances, lectures or exhibitions.

The project is a collaboration

Adapt is carrying out the project in collaboration with Edsvikens El, Akademiska hus and KTH. We have recently completed the design and testing phase. Here you can watch the first video (of three) and hear Leif Handberg, manager of Reaktorhallen R1, talk about the project.
